De oorspronkelijke U 2010 en de L 401 groeiden geleidelijk uit tot een hele familie van voertuigen. Daarom werd het Unimog-gamma vanaf 1963 uitgebreid met de nieuwe 406-serie.<\/p>\n<p>De wielbasis van deze nieuwe Mercedes-Benz Unimog bedroeg 2380 millimeter.<\/p>\n<p>De U 406 is altijd trouw gebleven aan het oorspronkelijke concept en de technische elementen van de vorige versies. Na drie jaar werd de U 65 vervangen door de U 70, die later werd vervangen door de U 80. Vanaf 1971 werd met het type U 84 een topklasse voertuig te koop aangeboden.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_406_de_best_verkochte_Unimog\"><\/span>De 406, de best verkochte Unimog<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hoewel de 406 Unimog verschillende upgrades onderging, werd hij 18 jaar lang, tot eind 1989, aan klanten aangeboden. De modellen 406.120 en 406.121 maakten 96% uit van alle ooit gebouwde U 406&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_65_pk_motor_van_de_Unimog_406\"><\/span>De 65 pk motor van de Unimog 406<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Tegelijkertijd verschenen er krachtigere dieselmotoren onder de korte motorkap van de Unimog 406. De 65 pk van een viercilinder motor, spoedig ge\u00ebvenaard door de legendarische zescilinder OM 312 grootverplaatsingsdieselmotor (5,7 liter), zette een nieuwe standaard voor motorvermogen. Deze nieuwe Unimog heeft de naam U 65 gekregen.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mercedes_doelen_met_de_U_406\"><\/span>Mercedes&#8217; doelen met de U 406<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>De nieuwe 406-serie was toegespitst op de motor, de cabine, de transmissie, de assen, de bevestigingsmogelijkheden voor werktuigen, het chassis en de asbelasting. De beproefde Unimog-samenstellen zouden in hoofdzaak worden overgenomen of behouden.<\/p>\n<p>Het chassis werd opnieuw ontworpen om plaats te bieden aan de langere wielbasis van 2380 m, de hogere toegelaten gewichten en het aanzienlijk hogere motorvermogen. De assen zijn geoptimaliseerd en de transmissie is aangepast aan het hogere vermogen.<\/p>\n<p>In de specificaties werden drie typen cabines met driepuntsophanging gespecificeerd:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vouwbare cabine,<\/li>\n<li>all-staal cabine,<\/li>\n<li>all-staal dubbele cabine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In het begin werd de productie van de cabines beperkt door de productiecapaciteiten.
