De 421 was bedoeld als opvolger van de 411, maar de twee modellen hebben een paar jaar naast elkaar bestaan toen de Unimog 411 uit het verkeer werd genomen. Bij de release werden twee modellen op de markt gebracht onder de naam U40. Het open cabine model met het serienummer 421.122 en het gesloten cabine model 421.123. Het voertuig was uitgerust met een 40 pk dieselmotor. De U45 volgde de U40 op met een 45 pk motor uit 1968.<\/p>\n<p>Het Unimog 421-gamma is zeer divers, met in totaal 13 motoren en 27 voertuigmodellen. De serie 421 werd eveneens in april 1989 opgeheven en vervangen door de serie 407<\/p>\n<p>De 100.000ste Unimog was een 421 die in mei 1966 werd verkocht, evenals de 150.000ste, een U52, in augustus 1971.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_comfortabelere_Unimog_U40\"><\/span>De comfortabelere Unimog U40<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>De U40 zag een grote verbetering in comfort met deze functies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>de open bestuurderscabine met vouwdak biedt plaats aan een doorlopende voorruit zonder onderverdeling, waardoor het zichtveld met 30% toeneemt,<\/li>\n<li>de cabine is met 13 cm verlengd,<\/li>\n<li>de totale binnenruimte is met 15% toegenomen,<\/li>\n<li>deze Unimog heeft ook betere geluidsisolatie,<\/li>\n<li>de bestuurdersstoel kan nu heen en weer worden geschoven,<\/li>\n<li>de rugleuning en de hoek van de zitting zijn nu traploos verstelbaar,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_cabines_en_het_interieur\"><\/span>De cabines en het interieur<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Alle cabines kunnen nu naar voren worden geklapt. Dit maakt het gemakkelijker om de motor en de transmissie te onderhouden en te repareren.<\/p>\n<p>De volledig stalen gesloten cabine, die is vergroot met een nieuw ontworpen frontrooster, is standaard voorzien van verwarming en ventilatie. De olie- en brandstofdrukmeters, thermometer, dubbele drukmeter en vier controlelampjes werden gecombineerd in \u00e9\u00e9n instrumentenpaneel. De snelheidsmeter kan worden vervangen door een dagteller.<\/p>\n<p>Vanaf 1970 werd de rolbeugel standaard op open cabines.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Afkomst_van_de_U52_U60_en_U600_van_1970-1971\"><\/span>Afkomst van de U52, U60 en U600 van 1970-1971<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>De U52 met een 52 pk motor volgde de U45 op.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Technische_kenmerken_van_de_U52\"><\/span>Technische kenmerken van de U52<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>De U52 bood plaats aan een 2,4 liter dieselmotor. De U52 was standaard uitgerust met een persluchttoevoersysteem, een urenteller en een mechanische snelheidsregeling. Portaalassen voor en achter, vierwielaandrijving met differentieelsloten op beide assen, die tijdens het rijden kunnen worden in- en uitgeschakeld zonder de trekkracht te onderbreken, alsmede schroefveren met extra vering achter en telescopische schokdempers voor en achter completeren de uitrusting van de Unimog.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_U60_verscheen_met_een_langere_wielbasis\"><\/span>De U60 verscheen met een langere wielbasis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In maart 1971 kwam er een nieuw model voor de 421-serie. De U60 met een 60 pk motor en een wielbasis van 2605 mm werd gelanceerd.<\/p>\n<p>Later in de jaren 1970 werden nieuwe verkoopbenamingen ingevoerd om het Unimog-gamma te verduidelijken. De U52 werd de U600 en de U60 met zijn langere wielbasis van 2605 mm de U600L.<\/p>\n<p>De Unimog U600T was standaard uitgerust met een volledig stalen cabine met verwarmings- en ventilatiesysteem, meervoudig verstelbare bestuurdersstoel, passagiersstoel, deuren met openslaande ramen en draairamen. Op verzoek werd de cabine ook geleverd met een opklapbare motorkap.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_uitrusting_van_de_Unimog_U421\"><\/span>De uitrusting van de Unimog U421<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Meer en meer uitrustingen en bodybuilders boden uitrustingen aan voor de Unimog.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_Unimog_voor_gemeenten\"><\/span>De Unimog voor gemeenten<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Overheidsinstanties zijn erg gesteld geraakt op de U421 om allerlei taken uit te voeren, zoals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>de strooi- en ruimingsdienst in de winter,<\/li>\n<li>wegenbouw,<\/li>\n<li>afvalinzameling,<\/li>\n<p> \t<Rioolreiniging.\n \t<onderhoud van wegen,<\/li>\n<li>verschillende brug- en wegwerkzaamheden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"De_Unimog_voor_het_leger\"><\/span>De Unimog voor het leger<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>De Unimog 421-serie is door de NAVO militair gebruikt als een 1,25t lichte terreinwagen. Hij kwam steeds meer in de plaats van de Unimog S met zijn zuinige 2,2 liter viercilinder dieselmotor.
